While we all gather around the breakroom tables at work (if you still have your job) and eat our lunch there seems to be one topic that comes up more often than not, the economy. The main subjects seem to be high gas prices, ever increasing grocery prices and the rate of home foreclosures. What we are not talking about is the impact this is having on our most innocent victims of this crisis- the children.
The economy and in particular the home mortgage meltdown resulting in record numbers of home foreclosures will not just have an impact on the stock market and the economy, it will also have an impact on the lives of nearly 2million children across the country in 2008-2009. This number includes families being evicted from rental units that are going into default and those children whose parents default on conventional loans.
Many of these children will experience feelings of fear, anxiety and stress. Schools are likely to see an increase in behavior problems as well as decreased academic performance due to many of these children being unable to articulate the stress they are under or the unwillingness to express these feelings openly because of a feeling of shame or embarrassment. The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth has estimated that in Tennessee alone 46,218 homes will go into foreclosure in 2008-2009, of that it is projected 42.9% will be households with children. So as we talk about the stress of the current economy, let us not forget about the most vulnerable victims-the children!!
